De stap van papieren registratie (groene kaart) naar digitale registratie in de Nederlandse huisartsenpraktijk werd gezet. Huisartsen die aangesloten waren bij het RNH registreren de gegevens van hun patiënten en relevante zorggegevens zoals ziekte en medicatie op uniforme wijze in hun huisarts-informatie-systeem (HIS). Deze dynamische gegevens zijn geanonimiseerd opgeslagen in een centrale database op de Universiteit Maastricht.\nIn 2018 is de naam van het RNH in verband met toenemende internationalisering gewijzigd in Research Network Family Medicine (RNFM) Maastricht. Het aantal praktijken dat deelneemt aan het RNFM Maastricht groeit. Op dit moment bestaat het netwerk uit 28 aangesloten huisartspraktijken. De actuele dataset bevat gegevens van 250.000 patiënten waarvan 141.000 momenteel actief. De dataset bevat gegevens omtrent ziekte-episodes; patiëntcontacten; medicatie etcetera en wordt driemaandelijks ververst. \nDe database is longitudinaal en dynamisch en was in zijn soort de eerste in
