Across two preregistered studies, we investigated whether learned food cue reactivity generalizes to stimuli that are perceptually or conceptually related to the original conditioned stimuli and whether individual differences in appetitive traits and maladaptive eating are associated with broader generalization. Participants first learned to associate one neutral stimulus (CS+) with chocolate M&Ms (US), whereas another (CS-) was never paired with M&Ms. Subsequently, conditioned responses were assessed to original CSs and novel stimuli sharing either perceptual features or conceptual category membership with the CSs. Outcome measures included US expectancy, US desire, and stimulus liking. Across both studies, participants successfully acquired differential food cue reactivity, showing greater expectancy, desire, and liking in response to the CS+ than the CS-. These conditioned responses generalized to both perceptually and conceptually related stimuli, although responses to generalization stimuli were weaker than to the original CSs. Individual differences in disordered eating, food craving, food responsiveness, emotional eating, and food addiction were consistently associated with stronger acquisition of conditioned responses, particularly for affective measures, but showed limited and inconsistent associations with the extent of stimulus generalization. These findings demonstrate that learned food cue reactivity extends beyond directly conditioned stimuli through perceptual and conceptual similarity. Generalization may therefore substantially increase the range of environmental cues capable of eliciting appetitive responding, highlighting an important learning mechanism through which modern food environments promote cue-driven eating."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Food cue reactivity"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Appetitive conditioning"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Stimulus generalization"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Food craving"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Disordered eating"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience - Maastricht University"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-07-29"},{"typeName":"dateOfCollection","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"dateOfCollectionStart":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2022-04-01"},"dateOfCollectionEnd":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2022-06-30"}},{"dateOfCollectionStart":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-03-01"},"dateOfCollectionEnd":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-05-31"}}]},{"typeName":"kindOfData","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["survey data","experimental data"]}]},"dansDataVaultMetadata":{"displayName":"Data Vault Metadata","name":"dansDataVaultMetadata","fields":[{"typeName":"dansDataversePid","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"doi:10.34894/PCHGJK"},{"typeName":"dansDataversePidVersion","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"1.0"},{"typeName":"dansBagId","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:uuid:a36636cd-0afe-4104-8cf6-ecaa7262b232"},{"typeName":"dansNbn","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:nbn:nl:ui:13-2cd01360-bb17-4a09-9509-b96d7bfc80ae"}]}},"files":[{"label":"datafile generalization1 n = 43.sav","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35133,"dataFile":{"id":657415,"persistentId":"","filename":"datafile generalization1 n = 43.sav","contentType":"application/x-spss-sav","friendlyType":"SPSS Binary","filesize":76195,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19facde9dc4-c46f64cbe9ff","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"af95ecadd97f1badd3302b6866c4c9a2d5574c2d"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-07-29","publicationDate":"2026-07-29","lastUpdateTime":"2026-07-29T09:02:05Z","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"label":"datafile generalization2 n = 67.sav","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35133,"dataFile":{"id":657416,"persistentId":"","filename":"datafile generalization2 n = 67.sav","contentType":"application/x-spss-sav","friendlyType":"SPSS Binary","filesize":105355,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19facde9c74-582486c9ad95","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"803d2ed0c8bd2104f651dff84e4013062509d43e"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-07-29","publicationDate":"2026-07-29","lastUpdateTime":"2026-07-29T09:02:05Z","fileAccessRequest":true}}]}}}
