The aim of this study is to gain insight whether and how supervisor-resident dyads build an educational alliance, and how they discuss and align goals and approaches to observation in particular.   \nWe used a qualitative, social constructivist approach to explore if and how supervisory dyads’ work towards alignment of goals and preferred approaches to performance observations. Data were collected from a series of semi-structured interviews with supervisor-resident dyads and analysed using template analysis. \nIn supervisory dyads, explicit communication on the use of  observations of clinical performance was scarce.
