This data collection on migration aspirations is embedded in questions that elicit perceptions of social transformation, social services, values and local migration history as well as aspects of the participants' personal life and traits. The questionnaire includes structured pre-defined open- and close-ended questions. This dataset contains two sets of data: quantitative data collected via the Kobo Toolkit application and exported to an xls file. Open-ended questions (and their recordings and transcripts) are provided in Word documents. The interviews were conducted in the cities of Abuja and Osogbo and they were conducted in English and Nigerian Pidgin English while questionnaire and the data entry was done in English. \n\n

\n● International migrants: This dataset captures the aspirations to stay, migrate or return of international migrants residing in Abuja and Osogbo. To qualify, international migrants had to live in these cities for at least three months and no longer than five years. However, it proved difficult to apply this time limit and the dataset include migrants who have been in Abuja and Osogbo longer than five years. The questionnaire had structured pre-defined open- and close-ended questions. The data were collected via the Kobo Toolkit application. The close-ended answers were exported to xls files, while answers to open-ended questions in transcripts in Word files. The interviews were conducted in English or French, depending on the participant's language of fluency. \n\n
Background
\nThis dataset is one of the key components of the PACES project, which aimed to understand how people decide to migrate, stay (or return for migrants). In particular, PACES sought to understand how people perceive major changes in society, how they understand their past-present and future, and how these factors influence their aspirations to stay or migrate. \n\n
Purpose
\nThe data capture people's perceptions of their current place of residence, what they expect in the future, both in society and in their personal lives, how they see migration and their own mobility preferences. This dataset gathers evidence on how in these two cities in Nigeria people understand migration, what they value about it as well as what they value about staying. \n\n
Data Collection and Methods
\nThe data in this dataset were collected through semi-structured interviews. \n\n
Research Limitations
\nThe limited number of interviews make this dataset not representative. However, the interviews are in-depth and give participants the opportunity to highlight what is important for them in their lives and what matters in their decisions to stay or migrate. \n\n
Data Structure and Relationships Between Files
\nEach row in the Excel files has one corresponding transcript. To be clear, the Excel file for Residents has a corresponding Resident transcript, and the same goes for Migrant files. \n\n
Value of the data for potential reuse
\nThis dataset has high value as it records people perspectives on life in these cities at this point in time, a moment of turbulence and high uncertainty in Nigeria's history and may be interested in these records. \n\n
Results
\nAt the moment, these data have been used for one working paper, not published yet. \n\n
Conclusion
\nThis dataset has important value but its in-depth nature makes it difficult to anonymise the data without losing meaning. For this reason, this dataset is closed access.\n\n

\n
Access status:
\n
Closed Access

\n\n
Data availability:
\n
The dataset is not accessible.

\n \n \n The repository record provides metadata only about the dataset.
"},"dsDescriptionDate":{"typeName":"dsDescriptionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-08-25"}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"migration aspiration"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"stay aspiration"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"social transformation"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"life course"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"personal traits"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"values"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"migration history"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Nigeria"}}]},{"typeName":"topicClassification","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"topicClassValue":{"typeName":"topicClassValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"migration"}}]},{"typeName":"notesText","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"This data is a big component of the research on migration decision-making and it includes qualitative and quantitative data."},{"typeName":"language","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["English","Hausa","Yoruba"]},{"typeName":"producer","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"producerName":{"typeName":"producerName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Vezzoli, Simona"},"producerAffiliation":{"typeName":"producerAffiliation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Erasmus University Rotterdam"}}]},{"typeName":"productionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2024-05-15"},{"typeName":"productionPlace","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["Abuja, Nigeria","Osogbo, Nigeria"]},{"typeName":"contributor","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"contributorType":{"typeName":"contributorType","multiple":false,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":"Data Manager"},"contributorName":{"typeName":"contributorName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Misbahu, Ismail (Samuel Hall)"}},{"contributorType":{"typeName":"contributorType","multiple":false,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":"Data Manager"},"contributorName":{"typeName":"contributorName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Abdulbasit, Badmus (Samuel Hall)"}}]},{"typeName":"grantNumber","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"grantNumberAgency":{"typeName":"grantNumberAgency","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Horizon Europe"},"grantNumberValue":{"typeName":"grantNumberValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"101094279"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Vezzoli, Simona"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-08-31"},{"typeName":"timePeriodCovered","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"timePeriodCoveredStart":{"typeName":"timePeriodCoveredStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-02-01"},"timePeriodCoveredEnd":{"typeName":"timePeriodCoveredEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-04-30"}}]},{"typeName":"dateOfCollection","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"dateOfCollectionStart":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-02-01"},"dateOfCollectionEnd":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-04-30"}}]},{"typeName":"kindOfData","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["Interview data"]},{"typeName":"series","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"seriesName":{"typeName":"seriesName","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"PACES"},"seriesInformation":{"typeName":"seriesInformation","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"PACES -
