Its promise for collective action in the 21st century is well documented (Zhuravskaya et al., 2020). From protesting on the streets to spillovers onto other mainstream media, Twitter1 in particular has been shown to be a useful tool for social and political mobilisation. For instance, the use\nof hashtags on Twitter led to an increase in protests by addressing barriers needed for coordination and increasing user-generated information and its reach (Acemoglu et al., 2018; Steinert-Threlkeld et al., 2015). Tweets can also spillover onto mainstream media to influence discourse across other platforms (Cage et al., 2020; Pazzona & Spagnolo, 2024), influence attitudes related to discrimination, including xenophobia (Bursztyn et al., 2019) and anti-minority sentiments (Muller & Schwarz, 2023). Digital spheres have become important grounds for social and political activity, however, the impact of bottom-up digital mobilisation on the platforms themselves is unclear, particularly for developing country contexts. This research places gender-based discrimination in India at the forefront and examines\nthe impact of digital gender mobilisation on online narratives related to women’s empowerment. In September 2018, the #MeToo movement was ignited with sexual harassment accusations in Indian Cinema. The weeks succeeding the event were marked by a boom in digital activism on women’s rights issues, ranging from outcry to rights-based activism and discourse. The question of its influence on platforms remains to be answered, i.e, did the movement change how gender and empowerment were discussed online?"},"dsDescriptionDate":{"typeName":"dsDescriptionDate","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-08-08"}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Gender narratives"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"#MeToo"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Social media"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"sexual harassment"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"India"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Notten, Ad"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-08-11"}]},"dansDataVaultMetadata":{"displayName":"Data Vault Metadata","name":"dansDataVaultMetadata","fields":[{"typeName":"dansDataversePid","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"doi:10.34894/JRJYJD"},{"typeName":"dansDataversePidVersion","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"1.0"},{"typeName":"dansBagId","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:uuid:51d222eb-8e20-4230-9a4d-e3642ceeca4f"},{"typeName":"dansNbn","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:nbn:nl:ui:13-3cb917fa-8c6e-41d9-a1b5-90cc54c06da5"}]}},"files":[{"label":"Chapter 5.do","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35171,"dataFile":{"id":661858,"persistentId":"","filename":"Chapter 5.do","contentType":"application/x-stata-syntax","friendlyType":"Stata Syntax","filesize":13064,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19ff158f41b-d1e9df2f40e5","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"a04047c286db0932e6a29f6a8f005ea3e5b0d48f"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-08-11","publicationDate":"2026-08-11","lastUpdateTime":"2026-08-11T15:03:20Z","fileAccessRequest":false}},{"label":"README.docx","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35171,"dataFile":{"id":661857,"persistentId":"","filename":"README.docx","contentType":"application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document","friendlyType":"MS Word","filesize":18885,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19ff1590904-becedb2410b1","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"3d70659fbd69e0802825e38f6b1128971cb91289"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-08-11","publicationDate":"2026-08-11","lastUpdateTime":"2026-08-11T15:03:20Z","fileAccessRequest":false}}]}}}
