We also asked about the type of symptoms and the motives involved. A slight majority of proxy respondents (59%) reported that they knew a person who had feigned symptoms, and 34% knew a person who had admitted to them having feigned symptoms. According to our respondents, the most often feigned symptoms were headache/migraine, common cold/fever, and stomachache/nausea, and the most important reasons for doing so were sick leave from work, excusing a failure, and seeking attention from others. We conclude that feigning is part of the normal behavioral repertoire of people and has little to do with deviant personality traits and/or criminal motives. Also, the current emphasis in the neuropsychological literature on malingering, i.e., feigning motivated by external incentives, might be one-sided given that psychological motives, notably seeking attention from others and excuse making, seem to be important determinants of everyday feigning."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Feigning"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Prevalence"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Malingering"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"DSM-5"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Proxy respondents"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience - Maastricht University"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2020-03-03"},{"typeName":"kindOfData","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["Experimental data"]}]},"dansDataVaultMetadata":{"displayName":"Data Vault Metadata","name":"dansDataVaultMetadata","fields":[{"typeName":"dansDataversePid","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"doi:10.34894/IKCMDK"},{"typeName":"dansDataversePidVersion","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"1.0"},{"typeName":"dansBagId","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:uuid:d0d2c092-2f8a-4ff4-b20d-6e5c92c065ca"},{"typeName":"dansNbn","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:nbn:nl:ui:13-5f9fb5a4-97f1-44bf-accd-0924659e0f60"}]}},"files":[{"label":"Anonymous prevalence of feigning.sav","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":2766,"dataFile":{"id":21940,"persistentId":"","filename":"Anonymous prevalence of feigning.sav","contentType":"application/x-spss-sav","friendlyType":"SPSS Binary","filesize":33347,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:170a0dd07e5-92b7c3918e60","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"c1508c9e2b9d24d5b6791014185021b5e018b570"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-03-03","publicationDate":"2020-08-24","lastUpdateTime":"2020-08-24T09:34:59Z","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"label":"Prevalence of feigning- Background.docx","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":2766,"dataFile":{"id":21942,"persistentId":"","filename":"Prevalence of feigning- Background.docx","contentType":"application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document","friendlyType":"MS Word","filesize":12300,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:170a0dd0677-c80f9bea3988","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"7496c198305ab6a547233530328929101ef7bda7"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-03-03","publicationDate":"2020-08-24","lastUpdateTime":"2020-08-24T09:34:59Z","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"label":"Ten questions about feigning_2018_fin.docx","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":2766,"dataFile":{"id":21939,"persistentId":"","filename":"Ten questions about feigning_2018_fin.docx","contentType":"application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document","friendlyType":"MS Word","filesize":20106,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:170a0dd0705-ccae309fe914","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"de475d624a9da0aef391bdf9193b2acf71f6eabb"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-03-03","publicationDate":"2020-08-24","lastUpdateTime":"2020-08-24T09:34:59Z","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"label":"Tien vragen over veinzen_2018_fin.docx","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":2766,"dataFile":{"id":21941,"persistentId":"","filename":"Tien vragen over veinzen_2018_fin.docx","contentType":"application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document","friendlyType":"MS Word","filesize":23491,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:170a0dd0772-29d32e72105e","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"6b193d94e025fb06929094083263a304320bc64e"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2020-03-03","publicationDate":"2020-08-24","lastUpdateTime":"2020-08-24T09:34:59Z","fileAccessRequest":true}}]}}}
