Yet, in recent \nyears, the motivation for theory has become uncertain and unclear, \nparticularly in fields that rely heavily on observation or \nexperimentation (e.g., psychology) or that are becoming increasingly \ndata-driven (e.g., neuroscience). Traditional arguments for theory may \nbe rationally convincing but fail to change day-to-day research \npractices in these fields. A new argument for theory is proposed, \nstarting from an analysis of the so-called ‘replication crisis’ and a \nmodel of the interplay between theory development and theory testing in \npsychology. For empirically-minded researchers in these fields, the \nvalue of theory development may lie in restricting the space of possible\n hypotheses and models to those that have greater a priori plausibility,\n thus reducing the risks (and costs) of pursuing false or even \nimpossible empirical claims. However, the motivation for theory needs to\n be rediscovered and reconstructed anew as the context of a particular \nresearch field shifts, and traditional arguments should not be invoked \nuncritically if they are to retain their power to influence beliefs and \npractices. <br>"}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Other"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Research Transparency"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Open Science"}}]},{"typeName":"notesText","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"<p>This entry is a one-file data package totaling 2.1 MB, containing a file in .pdf format.<p><p>If you use this dataset, please cite: Baggio, Giosuè (2022).
