Action execution accounts propose that performing motor responses drives evaluative change, whereas action interpretation models argue that such changes arise from propositional knowledge about stimulus-response contingencies. This research examined whether instructions specifying the contingencies between stimuli and go/no-go motor responses influence food evaluations and how they interact with subsequent GNG training. Across two preregistered studies, participants were randomly assigned to receive either detailed instructions about stimulus-response contingencies or general task instructions. Food evaluations were assessed after instruction but before training, and again after GNG training. Study 1 (n = 54) used familiar food stimuli (chocolate versus fruit), whereas Study 2 (n = 63) used novel, unfamiliar food stimuli. Across both studies, instructions alone did not change stimulus evaluations. In contrast, subsequent GNG training produced evaluative shifts, with a consistent go valuation effect across studies. The no-go devaluation effect varied by stimulus familiarity, with significant devaluation for familiar foods overall, whereas for novel foods it emerged only among participants with higher trait impulsivity. Higher trait impulsivity was also associated with stronger devaluation of familiar food items. These findings may reflect the role of stimulus value in devaluation effects. Devaluation is typically stronger for stimuli with higher initial value, which may explain why familiar foods showed more robust devaluation effects than novel foods. Similarly, individuals higher in impulsivity may assign greater value to appetitive stimuli, potentially facilitating devaluation following GNG training. Overall, these findings indicate that propositional knowledge of stimulus-response contingencies is insufficient to change food evaluations in GNG paradigms. Instead, evaluative change appears to depend on direct experience of these response contingencies during task performance."}}]},{"typeName":"subject","multiple":true,"typeClass":"controlledVocabulary","value":["Social Sciences"]},{"typeName":"keyword","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Go/No-Go training"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Instruction effects"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Food evaluation"}},{"keywordValue":{"typeName":"keywordValue","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Impulsivity"}}]},{"typeName":"depositor","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience - Maastricht University"},{"typeName":"dateOfDeposit","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-07-13"},{"typeName":"dateOfCollection","multiple":true,"typeClass":"compound","value":[{"dateOfCollectionStart":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2025-12-01"},"dateOfCollectionEnd":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-01-31"}},{"dateOfCollectionStart":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionStart","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-04-01"},"dateOfCollectionEnd":{"typeName":"dateOfCollectionEnd","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"2026-05-31"}}]},{"typeName":"kindOfData","multiple":true,"typeClass":"primitive","value":["survey data","experimental data"]}]},"dansDataVaultMetadata":{"displayName":"Data Vault Metadata","name":"dansDataVaultMetadata","fields":[{"typeName":"dansDataversePid","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"doi:10.34894/D9RZ3Q"},{"typeName":"dansDataversePidVersion","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"1.0"},{"typeName":"dansBagId","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:uuid:c022dd18-d036-4259-a01e-a70c8f7d672f"},{"typeName":"dansNbn","multiple":false,"typeClass":"primitive","value":"urn:nbn:nl:ui:13-c4f238e7-4de2-49ae-a91a-f3a9bca0e821"}]}},"files":[{"label":"Datafile GNGinstruct1.sav","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35059,"dataFile":{"id":655651,"persistentId":"","filename":"Datafile GNGinstruct1.sav","contentType":"application/x-spss-sav","friendlyType":"SPSS Binary","filesize":73414,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19f5b0bd6db-a9e9d40ce8a8","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"84fde0ed97a42c720f698a4c8659eb8965d0f7a9"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-07-13","publicationDate":"2026-07-13","lastUpdateTime":"2026-07-13T11:00:27Z","fileAccessRequest":true}},{"label":"Datafile GNGinstruct2.sav","restricted":true,"version":1,"datasetVersionId":35059,"dataFile":{"id":655652,"persistentId":"","filename":"Datafile GNGinstruct2.sav","contentType":"application/x-spss-sav","friendlyType":"SPSS Binary","filesize":57401,"storageIdentifier":"surf://store:19f5b0bd7ca-88b4df9e98c6","rootDataFileId":-1,"checksum":{"type":"SHA-1","value":"7f1cb834097a558129fd341144a012608ae8b1c1"},"tabularData":false,"creationDate":"2026-07-13","publicationDate":"2026-07-13","lastUpdateTime":"2026-07-13T11:00:27Z","fileAccessRequest":true}}]}}}
