Contacts (aged 12 to 60 years and both HIV negative and positive) were tested for TB at enrollment, those negative were followed-up at 6 months and 12 months for developing TB. Blood samples were collected at baseline and 6 months for testing. During the study period, TB testing was done on contacts who met symptoms criteria. At 12 months, all contacts also had a chest x-ray.\n\nThe study was conducted in Mozambique (Manhiça Health Research Center, Manhiça), South Africa (Stellenbosch University, Cape Town), and Uganda (Makerere University, Kampala). Amsterdam UMC/Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development coordinated the project.\n\nPreFIT enrolled 1291 index TB patients and 3031 close and household contacts; 2538 contacts completed follow-up. Based on the primary endpoint (bacteriologically confirmed pulmonary TB by positive sputum culture or positive sputum Xpert MTB/Rif or Ultra result excluding Ultra trace results in the absence of a positive culture or with a positive sputum Xpert Ultra trace result in the absence of a positive culture and a history of TB treatment in the preceding 24 months), 37 contacts were diagnosed with co-prevalent TB (between enrollment and day 14) and 66 contacts were diagnosed with incident TB (between day 15 and end of
